In a major step towards tackling child malnutrition and promoting women empowerment, 600 women have graduated in Tom Brown production in Jigawa State.
Governor Umar Namadi presided over the graduation ceremony, describing the initiative as a homegrown solution to improve child nutrition and economic self-reliance for women.
He noted that Tom Brown, also known as Kwashpap, is a locally made formula using ingredients like millet, groundnut, and soybeans proven effective in managing moderate acute malnutrition in children.
Governor Namadi said the program serves multiple purposes, including boosting household income for the beneficiaries and preventing cognitive damage in malnourished children.
The initiative, he explained, aligns with the state’s nutrition policy, which has shown progress. According to the 2024 National Demographic and Health Survey, stunting rates have dropped from 64% in 2018 to 55% in Jigawa.

Each of the 600 women received starter kits, including sealing machines and raw materials, to begin small-scale Tom Brown production in their communities.
Governor Namadi announced that local governments and primary healthcare centers will support and integrate these products into child health programmes across the state.
He said the state is working to reduce dependency on expensive imported supplements by promoting affordable, nutritious alternatives made locally.
The governor reiterated his administration’s focus on accelerating child growth and survival through community-driven nutritional solutions.
The initiative also forms part of Jigawa’s engagement in the World Bank-supported ANRiN Project aimed at expanding access to nutrition services for women and children under five.
Namadi explained that the project is designed to improve nutrition outcomes among pregnant and lactating women and young children.
He praised the dedication of all stakeholders involved and expressed confidence that the effort will create a healthier, stronger next generation in Jigawa.
Governor Namadi concluded by reaffirming his government’s long-term commitment to nutrition security and inclusive development across the state.
