The Kano State Government has stepped up efforts to prevent flooding during the 2026 rainy season, rolling out a series of proactive measures aimed at protecting lives, property and critical infrastructure across the state.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf disclosed this at a stakeholders’ meeting on flood predictions and the dissemination of early warning messages held at the Coronation Hall, Government House, Kano.
Represented by the Commissioner for Water Resources, Environment and Climate Change, Dahiru M. Hashim, the governor said the meeting was convened to translate national climate forecasts into practical, community-based early warning systems that would enable residents and relevant agencies to take timely preventive action against flooding.
He said the state was building on the successes recorded in 2025, when strategic interventions helped prevent major urban flooding in several parts of Kano.
According to him, the government will implement a comprehensive flood mitigation programme for 2026, including a statewide drainage clearance exercise, distribution of desilting equipment to community self-help groups, removal of illegal structures obstructing waterways and the planting of 10 million tree seedlings to serve as natural barriers against flooding.
Hashim reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to environmental sustainability and disaster risk reduction, stressing the need for collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure a flood-free rainy season and strengthen communities against the impacts of climate change.
