A new framework to regulate the activities of informal policing groups in Borno state have been developed.

The groups comprising of the Civilian JTF, hunters and vigilantes have all endorsed and agreed to the code of conduct which will help in strengthening security network at the community level.

At a ceremony in Maiduguri, state team leader, Managing Conflict in Nigeria of the British council Amin Buba said the Council observed gaps in the operations of policing groups which informed the development of the code.

He explained that in an effort to streamline their activities, the British Council with the support of the implementing partner and ministry of justice have trained members of CJTF, hunters and vigilantes on human right issues and principles of working with law enforcement agencies.

According to Mr. Buba the document will soon be launched.

“The Voluntarily Policing Sector group is a very important component that will add value to the safety and security working in partnership with formal security agencies especially at the community level. However there are gaps around their capacity understanding their roles in constitutional democracy, so the programme have organised series of training for their members” Buba said.

President Peace Ambassadors Centre for Humanitarian Aid Ambassador Ahmed Shehu , who is the implementing partner said a sustainability plan have been put in place to ensure that the policing group is active.

He charged them to strictly abide by the provisions of the code for peace and stability to reign in the state.

Chairman Voluntary Policing Sector , Baba Shehu Abdulganiyu noted that the code will strengthen their activities in areas of intelligence gathering and sharing with security agencies in the state.
