Speaker of the House of Representatives Mr Femi Gbajabiamila has met with President Muhammadu Buhari in Abuja, to presumably discuss direct primary adopted by the National Assembly.

The speaker said he was optimistic that President Buhari will support the National Assembly’s position saying he (the president) has always been a proponent of direct primaries.

He said the document had since been bound, and that it would be transmitted to the President.

The objective of direct primaries was to empower people at the grassroots to fully participate in governance, the Speaker told newsmen after the meeting the president.

There was crisis in the national assembly, in which both APC and PDP members aligned their stance, over the retention of the direct primary for picking candidates by political parties in the amended Electoral Act.
