Kaduna State House of Assembly is considering measures to grant greater independence to the campuses of the Kaduna State College of Nursing and Midwifery to improve their management, operational efficiency and quality of healthcare training in the state.

The Deputy Speaker, Henry Magaji Danjuma who presided over the plenary session at the Old Chamber of the Assembly Complex said the existing law will be reviewed to give way for amendment and reenactment of new law to conform to the prayers of the sponsor.

The proposal was contained in a motion sponsored by the member representing Jema’a Constituency, Ali Kalat, who highlighted the challenges associated with the merger of the former nursing and midwifery institutions into a multi-campus college.

The college was established under the Kaduna State College of Nursing and Midwifery Law of 2018, which repealed the laws governing the former School of Nursing and Midwifery, Kafanchan, and the College of Midwifery, Tudun Wada, Kaduna, thereby bringing the institutions together under a unified structure with campuses in Tudun Wada, Kafanchan and Pambegua.

According to the motion, the merger has created administrative and operational challenges, including difficulties in maintaining uniform academic standards, effective communication, equitable distribution of resources and proper coordination of school activities.

Other challenges identified include high operational costs, technological barriers to teaching, reduced interaction among campuses and difficulties in coordinating academic calendars and implementing school projects.

The lawmaker urged the House to call on the Kaduna State Government to enact appropriate legislation granting the campuses greater administrative independence to promote efficient management, strengthen coordination and encourage healthy competition among them.

He also proposed the introduction of additional programmes, including Community Nursing and Community Midwifery, to improve institutional relevance, broaden professional skills and enhance students’ employment opportunities and career prospects.

The proposed reforms, according to the motion, would also help improve internally generated revenue and strengthen the quality of healthcare delivery in Kaduna State, in line with the development agenda of Governor Uba Sani.
