The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Kaduna State Chapter, has called for stronger protection of the girl child, improved access to education and healthcare, and increased opportunities for empowerment.

The Chairperson of the association, Hajiya Sahura Jibril Maidoki, made the call in a statement issued by the chapter’s Secretary, Dr. Hadiza Bello Abdullahi, to mark the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child.

NAWOJ identified child marriage, gender-based violence, sexual abuse, discrimination and barriers to education as major challenges threatening the development and future of girls.

The association urged government, parents, traditional institutions and civil society organisations to strengthen child protection mechanisms, invest in girls’ education and improve access to menstrual health services.

It also called on parents and community leaders to challenge harmful practices and ensure that girls enjoy equal opportunities to learn, lead and contribute to society.

The association further urged media organisations to adopt responsible, child-sensitive reporting that protects the dignity, privacy and best interests of girls, particularly survivors of abuse.

NAWOJ reaffirmed its commitment to using journalism and public enlightenment to promote girls’ rights, amplify their voices and hold relevant authorities accountable for policies and programmes designed to protect them.

The association urged stakeholders to translate commitments into concrete actions, stressing that investing in the girl child would contribute to stronger families, healthier communities and a more prosperous society.
