The President Wikimedia Kaduna Network, Hajiya Ramatu Haliru has stressed the need for citizens of Kaduna State, particularly the youths to promote the rich culture and endowment of the state through their shared knowledge on Wikipedia.
Hajiya Haliru made the call during a program organized by the Kaduna Network in collaboration with the TYAP
wikimedians user group to trained people on how to upload images in Wikipedia.
Hajiya Ramatu Haliru explained that the International NGO Wikimedia foundation is a non profit making and voluntary organisation that has helped thousands of people interested in sharing their knowledge as well as promoting their communities and areas of interest to do so online through posting content on Wikipedia.
She noted that Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia where people search internationally to get credible knowledge on things.
“I want the Northern Youth, especially the Kaduna youth, not only youth, well meaning Kaduna people should come together let tell the Kaduna story your self,” she said.
Hajiya Ramatu expressed concern that the contribution of people in Kaduna State which is the “centre of learning” on Wikipedia is low, and called on people particularly the youth to key into it.
She said representing Nigeria particularly the North in a good perception on the global scene is the focus of the network in kaduna.
Also speaking, the facilitator of the program and team lead of Tyap wiki medians user group, Kambai Akau explained that Wikimedia foundation normally throw out campaigns just like the Wikipedia Page Wanting Photos, WPWP which is currently on going, saying pictures speak alot hence the need to take it seriously.
He explained that most articles in Kaduna State on Wikipedia don’t have pictures and the few that have are old ones, saying the wikipedIa page wanting photos challenge, will help to promote images on the already existing articles about the state.
In an interview, a participant at the program, Mrs Zaniab Buba said that she learnt about uploading pictures from wiki commons to wikipedia page while Mr. Sylvester Wella explained that if taking seriously one can win an international campaign prize on post on wikipedia that would change ones life.
The Wikipedia Page Wanting Photos”WPWP is a global call to promote ones heritage through pictures and it will end by August ten.
