Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has filed a ₦1 billion fundamental rights enforcement suit against the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) and three others at the Federal High Court, Abuja.

In the suit, El-Rufai is challenging what he described as an unlawful search of his residence and is seeking damages, the return of items allegedly seized during the operation, and an injunction restraining further actions against him.

He listed as respondents the Chief Magistrate who issued the search warrant, the Nigeria Police Force through the Inspector-General of Police, and the Attorney-General of the Federation, accusing them of violating his constitutional and statutory rights.

The former governor argued that the search warrant used to access his residence was defective and improperly obtained.

He also maintained that it was executed in a manner inconsistent with provisions of the law safeguarding citizens’ fundamental rights.

The legal action followed a February 19 operation during which operatives reportedly searched his residence based on a warrant issued by a magistrate’s court. El-Rufai insists the exercise was unlawful, prompting his decision to seek redress and compensation through the court.
