The Nigeria Union of Journalists NUJ, Jigawa State Council, has called for a renewed partnership with the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria ALGON to enhance grassroots communication and accountability.
This was made known by the NUJ Chairman, Comrade Ismail Ibrahim Dutse, during a courtesy visit to the ALGON Chairman in Dutse on Thursday.
Comrade Ismail expressed appreciation for the ongoing support ALGON has extended to journalists and emphasized the importance of continuous collaboration to support information dissemination in all 27 local governments.
He noted that in today’s digital age, especially with the rise of Artificial Intelligence, effective communication tools and training for local government media aides and information officers are essential.
The NUJ, he said, is ready to provide such training through its ICT center established by NITDA.
To aid information officers in their duties, the NUJ Chairman appealed to ALGON to provide motorcycles, digital recorders, and cameras, which would improve their mobility and productivity.
He also advocated for the inclusion of information officers in local government committees, stressing their role as the link between the government and the citizens.
As part of efforts to enhance transparency, Comrade Ismail proposed that each local government chairman hold monthly press briefings at the NUJ Secretariat to update the public on key developments.
He further recommended a statewide media tour to showcase projects and programs being implemented by various councils.
The NUJ Chairman maintained that closer ties between journalists and local government leaders would enhance accountability and promote grassroots development.
Comrade Ismail urged both parties to embrace stronger cooperation in the interest of transparent governance and public enlightenment in Jigawa State.
