The Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), has called for increased participation of women in politics and agricultural sector to accelerate the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in the country.

The Deputy Director on Policy Innovation Centre, Dr Osasiyi Dirisu made the call in Abuja during a press conference on the maiden edition of the Policy Innovation Centre, Gender and Inclusion Summit.

Dr. Dirisu who said involvement of women in political sphere would promote gender inclusion, called for removal of barriers affecting women to proactively participate in politics.

“We recognize that women are underrepresented in politics, and we have dedicated a whole track to ensure that we include this conversation in the summit, she said.

Earlier, the group’s Chief Executive Officer, Mr Laoye Jaiyeola, said women were disproportionately affected by unequal treatment on the basis of gender and attributed the low involvement of women in agriculture to inadequate funding and support.

” The fact of the case is that when it comes to all the value addition and all the things that has much more announcements and ratings, women were not involved. Because assess to finances is not there and a couple of others” he said.

He however, commended the Nigerian government for implementing policies such as the National gender Policy, National Gender Action Plan aimed at improving gender inclusion.
