GBV : Group Advocate Laws To Curb Menace

Center for information technology and development (CITAD), has charged government to put in place laws that would protectect individuals against gender based violence (GBV).

CITAD gender based violence desk officer, Buhari Abba made the call during a monthly media chat on addressing gender based violence held in Kano.

According to him, gender based violence cases are on the rise as eighty five cases on sexual harrasment and abuse, online intimidation, and wife battering were reported via the gender based violence app in the month of May.

The GBV desk officer pointed out that silence will not protect the victims who suffer as it encourage perpetrators to take it as a sign of acceptability by the victims.

Buhari Abba explained that, monitoring and reporting cases of violence has increased awareness among individuals and society at large.

“ we call on teachers/lecturers to uphold their duties towards the students in their care as teachers they need to protect such students not violate them.”

He maintained that available data obtained, has shown that the general public are beginning to acknowledge the importance of reporting gender based violence which will go a long way in reducing societal problems.

He appealed to parents, relatives and relevant stakeholders to report cases of GBV to relevant authorities to curtail the deadly menace.

Buhari urged school authorities to be vigilant by monitoring and curbing activities that may result to gender based violence in schools and offices.

Radio Nigeria reports that, sexual abuse constitutes the highest percentage in the month of May as thirty two cases of abuse on females aged between 19-29 was received by CITAD.
