The Kano State Government has launched a large-scale tree planting initiative aimed at tackling soil degradation, erosion, and other pressing environmental challenges.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf disclosed this at the official flag-off ceremony held in Makoda Local Government Area, where he announced that 5.5 million seedlings will be planted across the state.

Speaking at the event, Governor Yusuf stated that the initiative is designed to address the numerous environmental threats affecting communities in Kano. He emphasized that these challenges have caused considerable hardship for residents, especially in rural areas.

“The government has made all necessary provisions to nurse and sustain the seedlings to maturity, ensuring they achieve the intended environmental impact,” the governor said.

He called on all 44 local government chairmen, traditional rulers, and Community Development Officers (CDOs) to actively participate in the campaign, stressing that their support is vital for its success.

“If properly maintained, the trees will significantly contribute to climate change mitigation and support the state’s broader environmental sustainability goals,” he added.

Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Dahiru Mohammad Hashim, commended Governor Yusuf for his commitment and consistent support of the ministry’s environmental programs.

Representing the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Mohammad Sanusi II, Sarkin Dawakin Mai Tuta, Alhaji Mohammad Bello Abubakar, also pledged the full support of the Emirate Council for the program, describing it as a crucial step toward a greener future.

The event also featured the presentation of awards to individuals recognized for their exceptional contributions to community development and environmental sustainability. Organizers said the awards aim to inspire more citizens to take part in protecting the environment.
