House of Representatives has urged the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board-JAMB to rethink and allow its result to be valid for at least 3 (three) years.
This was sequel to a motion of by a member from Ekiti State, Mr Akintunde Rotimi adopted by the House during plenary.
Mr Akintunde Rotimi, was concerned that the JAMB examination result valid for only one year and if candidates failed to secure admission into tertiary institution of their choice in the academic year, no matter how good the result became useless.
The lawmaker also noted that despite incessant strikes embarked upon by ASUU which led to the loss of a complete academic calendar, JAMB still went ahead to conduct examination without recourse to the lingering industrial action across the country.
He emphasized that the backlog of candidates waiting for admission into the limited vacancies in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions and its attendant pressure on the education system and parents can only reduced by allowing the JAMB result to be valid for three years.
The Board which was established in 1978 and authorized to administer Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination as requirement for admission into all Nigerian Universities, Polytechnics, and Colleges of Education.
Adopting the motion, the House urged Federal Minister of Education to put mechanisms in place to ensure that effective execution of the resolutions.
