Jigawa State Universal Basic Education Board, in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), has trained assessors on reading and arithmetic assessment for primary school pupils.
The UNICEF consultant on Early Grade Assessment,Dr Farouk Aliyu, explained that, the 4-day training which began on Monday, aimed at assessing the status of learning in schools.
According to him, they targeted pupils of primary one and two teachers Mathematics and Hausa, in each school.
Dr Farouk Aliyu pointed out that, the essence is to build an understanding of reading and mathematical ability of the children in the early grade level in Jigawa state.
He noted that, it is also to understand how teachers are teaching and know if they are following the right procedure taught by UNICEF and other educational bodies or not.
He added that if there are gaps, then it will serve as an avenue for retraining and policy making or even attract a change of the curriculum as a whole.

The UNICEF consultant said, they trained 67 participants who will go to the field and collect reliable and valid data for policy making that supports education system in the state.
UNICEF is supporting education system in Jigawa and Nigeria for many years on teacher training, provision of learning and teaching materials.
The training reinforces the commitment of the European Union and Jigawa state government to improving learning outcomes and ensuring that every child acquires foundational literacy and numeracy skills.
Radio Nigeria reports that, over 1,680 Primary 1-3 teachers have been trained in foundational literacy and numeracy methodologies to enhance teaching effectiveness and improve learning outcomes.
Over 152,386 teaching, and learning materials have been distributed to early grade learner’s across the intervention schools.
