Arewa House Centre for Research and Historical Documentation, Ahmadu Bello University has organized a one-day roundtable dialogue and reaffirmed the enduring relevance of the leadership philosophy and development vision of Sir Ahmadu Bello, sixty years after his death.

 

The dialogue held at the Main Auditorium of Arewa House in Zaria, brought together scholars and intellectuals from universities across Northern Nigeria.

 

In his address, the Director, Arewa House Centre for Research and Historical Documentation Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Professor Aliyu Yahaya explained that the discussions focused on the life, leadership style, governance philosophy, and institutional legacy of the late Sardauna of Sokoto, with emphasis on their continued relevance to contemporary Nigeria.

 

Professor Aliyu Yahaya explained that the participants observed that Sir Ahmadu Bello effectively managed the ethnic and cultural diversity of Northern Nigeria through an inclusive and detribalised leadership approach.

 

“His governance style anchored on justice, service to humanity, and respect for minority interests—was credited with fostering unity, regional cohesion, and intergroup harmony”.

 

Professor Aliyu Yahaya said the roundtable identified discipline, integrity, humility, and accountability as defining attributes of the Sardauna’s leadership.

 

” Speakers noted his resistance to political manipulation, commitment to long-term planning, and strong administrative foresight, which were described as critical to sustainable governance and development”.

 

“Northernisation Policy as a strategic effort to build indigenous capacity within the public service. The policy was praised for promoting self-reliance, empowering Northerners, and expanding local participation in governance and development”.

 

“Education as a Development Pillar

Participants also acknowledged Sir Ahmadu Bello’s transformative investments in education, including the expansion of schools and scholarship programmes”.

 

” His belief in education as a foundation for social mobility and economic progress was described as central to the region’s human capital development”.

 

“In the area of socioeconomic development, the dialogue underscored the Sardauna’s role in promoting industrialisation and institutional building”.

 

“The establishment of key financial and industrial institutions was said to have laid the groundwork for regional self-reliance, entrepreneurship, and economic integration”.

 

“The roundtable stressed that Sir Ahmadu Bello was a committed federalist whose political philosophy supported national unity while respecting regional autonomy”.

 

“Participants noted that his vision of balanced federalism and unity in diversity remains relevant in addressing Nigeria’s contemporary governance and ethno-religious challenges”.

 

At the end of the dialogue, participants resolved to: reaffirm the enduring relevance of Sir Ahmadu Bello’s leadership philosophy and development vision.

 

Promote sustained scholarly engagement with his governance model, particularly in unity, education, and institutional development.

 

Encourage leadership recruitment processes that prioritise integrity, discipline, and accountability.

 

Strengthen regional collaboration in advancing education and economic development.

 

Institutionalize annual reflective dialogues at Arewa House to preserve and disseminate the Sardauna’s legacies.

 

“The roundtable concluded that the legacies of Sir Ahmadu Bello remain fundamental to understanding the historical trajectory and development aspirations of Northern Nigeria.”

 

“Sixty years after his passing, his vision of inclusive leadership, educational advancement, industrial growth, and balanced federalism continues to offer strategic guidance for policy and governance”.

 

Participants expressed appreciation to the organisers and reaffirmed their commitment to sustained intellectual and policy engagement inspired by the enduring legacy of the Sardauna of Sokoto.
