The Kano State Government has renovated over 1,200 public schools across its 44 Local Government Areas as part of efforts to revamp the education sector.
Kano state commissioner for education Dr Ali Haruna Makoda stated this during a one-day Quality Assurance Workshop held at the Community Education Resource Committee (CERC) conference hall.
Dr. Makoda explained that the initiative is part of a broader commitment by the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to reposition education in the state.
He explained that, in addition to the large-scale renovations, the government had also allocated N484 million to fund school renovation projects in 484 wards, with local councillors directly involved in overseeing implementation.
According to him, the project is the first of its kind in Kano’s education history.
“Since the present administration came into office, it has renovated more than 1,200 schools across the 44 LGAs. This is in addition to the ward-level renovation projects being executed by our elected councillors at the cost of N484 million,”
The Commissioner described the initiative as a direct response to the State of Emergency on Education declared by the government in May 2024.
He said the declaration reflects Governor Yusuf’s resolve to restore the sector to its lost glory.
Dr. Makoda also recalled that the government had recently approved N3 billion for the renovation of 13 girls’ boarding schools that were previously shut down by the past administration.
He further noted that Kano has over 30,000 schools, the highest number in the country, stressing that the government is committed to ensuring that every child receives quality and equitable education.
Commenting on the importance of the workshop, the Commissioner emphasized the need for a robust quality assurance framework to monitor learning outcomes and ensure accountability.
“Without well-trained quality assurance staff, improvements in enrollment, infrastructure, and teacher recruitment may not yield the desired results,” he said.
The workshop, he added, aims to equip education directors, school heads, and monitoring officers with the tools and knowledge needed to evaluate teaching and learning activities effectively.
Dr. Makoda urged participants to be fully engaged and to cascade the skills and knowledge gained to their respective zones and schools, describing the workshop as not just a training, but a strategic intervention to promote excellence and equity in Kano’s education system.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education, Alhaji Bashir Baffa Muhammad, said the participants were drawn from various agencies under the ministry, including senior officials and key stakeholders.
Presentations at the workshop included:
An Overview of Quality Assurance by Professor Ahmed Ilyasu from BUK and Evaluation Schedule and Thematic Areas by Bashir Sule.
