Amid rising socio-economic and political challenges in Northern Nigeria, a new movement, Arewa Cohesion for Peace, Unity and Development Initiative — has been launched by former Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa.

The movement was officially unveiled at a ceremony held at the historic Arewa House in Kaduna, drawing stakeholders from across the region.

Speaking at the event, Bafarawa, who serves as Chairman of the Board of Trustees, described the initiative as the beginning of a journey towards healing divisions, fostering understanding, and nurturing sustainable development in the region.

He noted that Northern Nigeria faces mounting issues including communal conflicts, insecurity, youth restiveness, economic marginalisation, and the erosion of traditional values. According to him, the movement aims to promote peaceful coexistence among diverse communities, while providing platforms for dialogue, reconciliation, and conflict resolution.

Bafarawa emphasized that the initiative will actively engage youths and collaborate with governments, traditional and faith-based institutions, civil society organizations, and international partners in the quest to build a safer, stronger, and more inclusive region.

He stated that the movement is non-political and has no intention of transforming into a political party or aligning with any group.

He said their mission transcends partisan politics and they are ready to work with anyone, regardless of political affiliation, who shares their commitment to transforming Arewa and Nigeria for the better.

The former Sokoto State Governor added that the movement is open to collaboration with any organization that shares similar objectives.

While reaffirming the initiative’s non-partisan status, Bafarawa acknowledged that members are free to pursue individual political ambitions outside the scope of the movement.

He also announced the development of a comprehensive blueprint for Northern Nigeria — a strategic roadmap born from thorough research and reflection on the region’s vast potential.

In his remarks, the Director General of the movement, Dr. Abdullahi Idris, explained that the initiative was founded on the conviction that the region’s challenges can only be addressed through genuine collaboration, mutual understanding, and a shared agenda for peace and development.

Dr. Idris described the Arewa Cohesion Initiative as a timely and strategic response to the challenges, anchored on three core pillars: peacebuilding, regional unity, and sustainable development.

He advised stakeholders to adopt a long-term perspective in addressing the region’s problems, noting that the issues did not arise overnight and will not be resolved overnight. However, with patience, coordination, and sustained commitment, he said, transformation is achievable.

Chairman of the occasion and retired General, Jon Temlong, praised Bafarawa’s dedication to nation-building beyond political office. He described the initiative as a reflection of the values that define the region — brotherhood, justice, and unity.

General Temlong said the leadership of the movement carries the hopes of millions, adding that the unveiling could mark a turning point in Northern Nigeria’s pursuit of lasting peace and sustainable development.

The event witnessed a significant turnout of participants from across the northern region, symbolizing a shared commitment to the cause.
