The Arewa House: Centre for Research and Historical Documentation, Ahmadu Bello University has announced plans to host a one-day roundtable to commemorate the legacy of Sir Ahmadu Bello, sixty years after his assassination.
The Director of Arewa House, House Prof. Aliyu Yahaya stated this during a press briefing held in Kaduna.
Prof. Aliyu Yahaya welcomed journalists to Arewa House, the former official residence and office of the late Sardauna of Sokoto, describing the centre as a historic site where many landmark decisions that shaped the development of Northern Nigeria were taken.
According to him, the roundtable, themed “Remembering Sir Ahmadu Bello, Sardaunan Sokoto, Sixty Years After: A Dialogue in Unity and Vision,” is part of the institution’s 2026 calendar of activities and is designed to serve as an intellectual platform to re-examine the vision, leadership style, and enduring contributions of the late Northern Premier.
Prof. Yahaya noted that Sir Ahmadu Bello, who served as the first and only Premier of the former Northern Region from 1954 until 1966, was renowned for his commitment to education, agricultural development, institutional building, and the promotion of unity across the region’s diverse communities.
He emphasized that hosting the event at Arewa House is both symbolic and morally appropriate, given the institution’s historic role as the seat of government and venue for cabinet meetings during Sir Ahmadu Bello’s administration.
The Director explained that the roundtable aims to revisit the Sardauna’s legacy in leadership, governance, and public service, particularly at a time when Nigeria is grappling with challenges of national unity, leadership accountability, and socio-economic transformation.
Prof. Aliyu Yahaya disclosed that the programme will feature six panel interventions addressing various sub-themes, followed by moderated discussions, open-floor contributions, and interactive question-and-answer sessions.
“Proceedings from the event will also be documented and shared widely to encourage broader public engagement”.
“The event is scheduled to hold on Thursday, 26th February, 2026, by 10:00 a.m., at the Arewa House Auditorium, Rabah Road, Kaduna”.
The center invited members of the public and media organizations to attend and cover the dialogue, describing it as an important national conversation on leadership, unity, and development.
