Jigawa State College of Nursing Sciences, Birnin Kudu Campus, has matriculated its first set of 116 students into National and Higher National Diploma programmes for the 2025 academic session.
Speaking at the historic event, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Muhammad Abdullahi Kainuwa, noted that one of his earliest actions in office was to constitute a Governing Council and restructure the college.
These steps, he said, led to full accreditation and a sharp increase in student admissions from 120 to 240.
Dr. Kainuwa emphasized the urgent need to build the state’s nursing workforce, revealing that Jigawa currently has 1,669 nurses and midwives far below the 3,552 required, leaving a gap of 1,883 personnel in the health sector.
He also commended the Babura and Birnin Kudu campuses for their impressive performance in national examinations, which he said contributed to the smooth accreditation of the college.
In his remarks, Chairman of the Governing Council, Malam Salele Abdul, urged parents to remain actively involved in their children’s academic journey and praised the Health Commissioner, calling him a hero of the nursing profession.
The College Provost, Malam Garba Adamu, assured parents of the institution’s commitment to quality training, saying students would be equipped to become responsible citizens and competent healthcare providers.
During the event, the College Director, Nurse Rasheeda Musa Ya’u, formally presented the students for matriculation, while the Registrar, Malam Muhammad Sale Korau, administered the Oath of Allegiance.
Others who spoke included the Head of Nursing Department and Chairman of the Matriculation Committee, Malam Abubakar Garba Muhammad, and representatives of the Nigerian Nurses Association, family, and friends who gathered to witness the college’s first matriculation ceremony.
