House of Representatives has received hundreds of petitions from the Nigerian citizens who are worried about impact of the recent policies of the Central Bank of Nigeria CBN.

Speaker of the house Mr Femi Gbajabiamila, made the remark at the 2022 distinguished parliamentarians lecture in Abuja.

In a paper titled ”Delivering on our contract with Nigeria” implementing the legislative agenda of the 9th house of Representatives – Progress, challenges and way forward, the speaker said people were concerned that the policy approach would not deliver its stated objectives.

Mr Gbajabiamila also observed that it was unusual for such policy programme to be designed, approved and announced without any engagement with the legislature being the representatives of people from different backgrounds.

The Speaker emphasized that though each arm of government had its prerogatives but the country cannot afford actions that set the stage for the competing objectives of different arms of government to descend into governance dysfunction and paralysing conflict.

He however, stressed the need for the citizens to be well informed on the functions of the legislature to enable them make the right electoral decisions while electing their Representatives.

In a remark, the Director General National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies NILDS Professor Abubakar Sulaiman, explained that the lecture was organised to allow members of the Parliament speak about their stories, and make legislative processes clearer to Nigerians.
