The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria has called on the general public to be cautious in attending Nursing and Midwifery training institutions to avoid Quacks

Secretary General and Registrar of the council Dr Umar Faruk Abubakar, gave the warning while speaking to newsmen in Abuja over the prevalence of schools claimed to be accredited by the council.

Dr Umar Faruk explained that the profession is a sensitive one that deals with human anatomy and needed to be taught by experts in the field.

He argued that it will be a suicidal for unqualified people to be teaching Nigerians nursing and midwifery courses without being accredited by the council.

The registrar said the council would publish all the accredited institutions by the council to avoid being cheated by quack schools.

Dr Faruk further cautioned certified nurses and midwives against unethical conduct, adding that the council would not hesitate to sanction any member who failed to adhere to ethics of the profession.

The Secretary General urged states and local government areas, to help the council identify and solve some challenges that are critical to the provision of adequate manpower especially in the rural communities

Dr Umar therefore reiterated commitments in ensuring good synergy with such states and local government areas to encourage training of community manpower.

He said the council will not relent in its efforts in ensuring sanity in the system, saying the council would ensure fake practitioners are eliminated out of the system

Dr Umar said the council will continue to protect the interest and integrity of trained, qualified and registered members so that Nigerians will have confidence in dealing with whoever they found in the rural hospitals.
