Flood Wrecks Havoc, Kills 5 In Kano

Kano House of Assembly has called on Senators and Federal House of Representatives members from the state to take appropriate action on Tiga dam meander to save the lives and properties of residents in the area.

This was sequel to a joint motion of public importance presented by
members representing Kiru, Bebeji and Rano, Alhaji Kabiru Hassan Dashi, Abubakar Uba Galadima and Nurudeen Alhassan Ahmed, during plenary session, presided over by the Speaker, Engineer Hamisu Ibrahim Chidari.

Alhaji Kabiru Hassan Dashi who doubles as the deputy speaker, explained that Tiga Dam has spilled and affected communities within the vicinity.

He attributed the disaster to closure of the dam by Hadejia Jama’are river basin authority, due to maintenance which triggered overtopping and spillage.

Also speaking, member representing Rano local government area, Alhaji Nurudeen Alhassan Ahmed pointed out that, five people, nine houses and hundreds of farmlands were washed away by flooding in Rano.

In their contributions members representing Warawa, Kibiya, Kura/ Garun Malam and Dala, called for urgent intervention by relevant authorities, saying that for over 30 years the dam has not been filled to capacity as now, which may further worsen the situation.

After careful deliberations, the House called on legislators representing Kano in the National Assembly, to take proper legislative action on Tiga Dam flooding.

Similarly, member representing Doguwa local government, Alhaji Salisu Ibrahim Muhammad has appealed to the state government, to come to the aid of motorists and residents of Gada biyu near Falgore forest, who were affected by heavy rainfall which led to the destruction of Waila bridge.

He highlighted that, motorists were stranded as the road serves as a link to Taraba, Venue, Plateau, Kaduna and Kano states.

On flooding experienced in some parts of Kano, Alhaji Nuhu Abdullahi Acika and Alhaji Nasiru Abdullahi Dutsen Amare, appealed to the state government to come to the aid of Wudil and Karaye local government areas, as Windstorm has destroyed over 300 residential areas and farmlands.

The House deliberated and recommended, that the local government councils and statye Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), to as a matter of urgency assist those affected before intervention by the state government.

In a similar development, Kano state House of Assembly has adopted the report, on House standing committee on environment, in respect of Kano State Environmental Pollution Control Bill, 2022.

Speaking to newsmen shortly after plenary session, chairman House standing committee on environment, Alhaji Musa Ali Kachako stressed that the bill would go a long way in enhancing pollution control, environmental sanitation as well as provision of legal frame work among others.

The House adjourned it’s sitting to Wednesday.
