The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Kano Strategic Command, has welcomed the conviction of a 28-year-old man, Ashiru Idris, who was sentenced to seven years imprisonment for publicly advertising cannabis sativa for sale on social media.

The NDLEA said in a statement issued in Kano by its Media and Advocacy Officer, Assistant Superintendent of Narcotics Sadiq Muhammad Maigatari, that the judgment was delivered by Justice S.M. Shuaibu of the Federal High Court, Kano.

According to the statement, the suspect was arrested on April 22, 2026, after operatives of the command, acting on the directive of the State Commander, CN DY Lawal, traced and apprehended him over a viral social media video in which he openly advertised cannabis sativa for sale.

The court convicted Idris and sentenced him to seven years imprisonment without the option of fine. The sentence is to run from July 14, 2026, the date of the judgment.

Reacting to the judgment, the Kano State Commander of the NDLEA, Commandant Dahiru Lawal, described the ruling as a strong warning to individuals who use public platforms to promote or traffic illicit drugs.

“This judgment reinforces our resolve to confront drug offenders who brazenly promote illegal substances on public platforms. We will continue to act swiftly on credible intelligence and ensure offenders are brought to justice,” Lawal said.

The commander also appreciated the Chairman/Chief Executive Officer of the NDLEA, retired Brig.-Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa, CON, OFR, for his continued support and leadership, which he said had strengthened the command’s operations in Kano.
