Jigawa State Government has approved the launch of the North-West Chapter of the National Community Food Bank Programme (NCFBP), a multisectoral initiative to be inaugurated by the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Bola Ahmed Tinubu, at Gandun Sarki Primary Health Centre in Mallam Madori Local Government Area of the state.
The State Commissioner for Environment and Climate Change, Dr. Nura Ibrahim Kazaure, disclosed this after the State Executive Council meeting held at the Government House, Dutse.
According to him, the initiative is aimed at combating hunger and reducing child malnutrition across the region.
He said, It would alleviate acute food insecurity faced by vulnerable individuals across the country by providing structured time-limited access to locally sourced foods.
Dr Nura Ibrahim Kazaure pointed out that, eligible beneficiaries would be identified through screening at primary health care centres,where vouchers would be provided to be redeemed at the designated food banks.
He added that, the targets are families with young children under six years as well as pregnant and breast feeding women at risk of malnutrition.
The Commissioner noted that, the program also aims to leverage the country’s agricultural potential to ensure surplus food reaches those that who need it most.
He said, the Initiative aligns perfectly well with Governor Namadi’s 12-point agenda of ensuring productive and healthy population through provision of healthy food in the state.
Radio Nigeria reports that, the state government also sympathized with victims of storm and rain destruction across the state.
The council has also directed the
Ministry of humanitarian affairs and special duties to support the victims.
