President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his administration’s unwavering commitment to deepening democratic governance, strengthening national institutions, and safeguarding press freedom in Nigeria.
Speaking at the Annual Conference of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) held at the State House, Abuja, the President emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and national unity as essential pillars for building public trust and sustaining democracy.
He described journalism as a vital force in shaping public understanding, combating misinformation, and promoting responsible national discourse.
President Tinubu urged media professionals to uphold integrity and patriotism in their reportage, stressing that the media must remain a stabilizing factor in times of social and political tension.
The President further highlighted his administration’s ongoing economic reforms designed to stabilize the economy, strengthen key institutions, and improve citizens’ welfare.
He explained that the government is implementing a modernized tax regime to boost infrastructure, education, and healthcare, while ensuring fairness and efficiency in national development.
On national security, President Tinubu assured that his administration remains focused on addressing the challenges of terrorism and banditry through decisive actions and strategic partnerships.
He also reiterated his commitment to protecting press freedom, revealing ongoing efforts to review and repeal outdated laws that hinder journalistic independence.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Muhammad Idris, commended the President’s consistent stance against oppression and his deep respect for the role of the media in nation-building.
He noted that Nigeria currently boasts over 1,000 licensed media outlets, none of which have been shut down for expressing opinions, reflecting the administration’s tolerance for free speech and media diversity.
Mr. Idris urged journalists to engage responsibly with ongoing reforms and to collaborate with the government in promoting balanced reporting that reflects Nigeria’s progress and aspirations.
He emphasized that the media’s contribution to national renewal must be guided by fairness, professionalism, and optimism.
In his remarks, President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors, Eze Anaba, described the annual conference as a vital platform for national reflection and dialogue on the media’s role in strengthening democracy.
He noted that President Tinubu’s presence at the event underscores the government’s recognition of the media as a key partner in governance.
Mr. Anaba urged editors to continue upholding truth, transparency, and accountability while promoting unity and national cohesion.
He also called for government support to ensure the economic sustainability of media organizations facing rising operational costs, stressing that a vibrant and independent press remains indispensable to Nigeria’s democratic growth.
