The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has joined the global Christian community in mourning the death of His Holiness, Pope Francis.

In a statement signed by CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the association described Pope Francis as a “towering figure of faith” whose papacy exemplified mercy, justice, and a deep love for humanity.

Archbishop Okoh highlighted the Pope’s commitment to interfaith dialogue and his vocal stance against poverty, corruption, and inequality, values he said resonated strongly with many Nigerians.

He called on citizens to uphold the dignity of all individuals in honour of the Pope’s legacy.

The CAN president extended heartfelt condolences on behalf of the association’s national leadership and the Nigerian Christian community to the Catholic Church and all those who admired the Pope’s leadership and compassion.

He also offered prayers for the peaceful repose of Pope Francis’s soul, expressing hope that his legacy would continue to inspire efforts toward a more united and just Nigeria.

Pope Francis passed away at 88, at his residence in Casa Santa Marta within Vatican City. The Pope’s death comes just one day after he publicly appeared in St Peter’s Square, where he greeted thousands of worshippers with a heartfelt “Happy Easter.”

In February 2025, Pope Francis was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli Hospital with bronchitis, which progressed to double pneumonia. Despite initial signs of improvement and a brief discharge in March, his health deteriorated, leading to his passing on April 21.

The death of Pope Francis has elicited an outpouring of grief worldwide. In Gaza, Christians mourned the loss of a leader who offered nightly phone calls to provide comfort during ongoing conflicts.

In the United States, actress Whoopi Goldberg shared a heartfelt tribute, recalling her rapport with the Pope and his appreciation for her film “Sister Act.”

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu has condoled with the Catholic Church, the global Catholic community, and the Christian faithful over the death and described Pope Francis as a humble servant of God, a tireless champion of the poor, and a guiding light for millions.
