The Vice-Chancellor, of Bayero University Kano Professor Sagir Adamu, said Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital has conducted over 100 kidney transplants since inception in 2002.

Professor Sagir made the indication during a three-day kidney transplant and urology workshop organized by the tertiary education trust fund (Tetfund), held at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (AKTH).

Represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Management Services, Professor Mahmud Sani explained that, AKTH was one of the first northern teaching hospitals to engage in the indigenization of kidney transplants 20 years ago.

He commended Tetfund for initiating the project in AKTH and called for sustainability and extension to other health facilities.

The supervising Chief Medical Director (CMD), AKTH Professor Umar Gajida pointed out that Tetfund has done a lot in terms of kidney transplanting.

Represented by the acting chairman Medical Advisory Committee CMAC Dr. Dalha Gwarzo described the workshop as apt.

Head of the contractors who supplied laboratory equipment Alhaji Umar Ali, stressed that over N200 million naira was spent to procure equipment such as laser for transplant operation, and stone crash of the kidney among others.

Some of the participants who spoke to Radio Nigeria promised to make judicious use of the knowledge gained.

Radio Nigeria reports that participants were drawn from six teaching hospitals across six northern states of Kano, Bauchi, Plateau, Maiduguri, Abuja and Kaduna, where the medical doctors would witness three live kidney transplants as part of activities for day 3.
