A truck loaded with ammunition has been intercepted on its way to Anambra by Troops of 192 Battalion, Nigerian Army, operating in 81 Division Area of Responsibility.
The troops, following intelligence reports, were conducting a stop-and-search operation along Ajilete-Owode Road in Yewa North LGA of Ogun State, when they discovered a truck that was loaded with 720 packets of Red-Star Cartridges of 12 Caliber, containing 25 cartridges per packet, totaling 18,000 cartridges and an additional 250 packets of live (black) cartridges containing 10 packets each, totaling 2,500 cartridges of same caliber.
Apart from the truck with registration number ENU 697 Xy as well as its cargo of illegal ammunition, the troops also took into custody two suspects identified as Eric Seworvor, a Ghanaian national, and the truck driver, Lukman Sani, both of whom are reported to be cooperating in ongoing investigations.
A statement by the Director of Army Public Relations, Brigadier-General Onyema Nwachukwu, said preliminary investigations indicated that the criminals had escaped check-points as they imported the ammunition from Mali through the Idiroko International Border, headed for Onitsha, Anambra State.
The statement appealed to all law-abiding individuals to continue to provide the military and other security agencies with reliable and useful information as they work to address security issues across the nation.
The Chief of Army Staff, Major-General Taoreed Lagbaja commended the efforts of the troops and urged for more collaboration with other services and security agencies to ensure a safe and secured environment for all Nigerians and for socio-economic development across the country.
