Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving teachers’ welfare, professional development and working conditions to strengthen the state’s education sector.
Yusuf stated this in a message to mark the 2026 World Teachers’ Day celebration, themed: “Standing with Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing Its Status and Shaping Our Future.” The celebration was held at the Coronation Hall and the government was represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG).
The governor said his administration had recruited more than 16,000 teachers since assuming office, including 8,588 recruited in July 2026, comprising 4,900 newly recruited and trained teachers and 3,688 ABBA Gida-Gida BESDA teachers. He added that the recruitment was complemented by investments in school infrastructure, furniture, teaching materials and continuous professional development.
Yusuf commended Kano teachers for their dedication, saying their efforts contributed significantly to the state’s performance in the National Examinations Council (NECO) examinations. He said Kano emerged as the best-performing state in NECO for two consecutive years, 2025 and 2026, with 74,413 candidates recording at least five credits, including English Language and Mathematics, in the 2026 results.
The governor assured teachers that his administration would continue to invest in education, improve their welfare and address infrastructure challenges arising from the state’s growing population.
He also urged teachers, parents and guardians to support the fight against drug abuse, embrace technology and innovative teaching methods, while investing in teachers, which he described as an investment in the future of Kano State and Nigeria.
