An economist and lecturer at Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, Professor Ismail Isa Mohamed, has urged Nigeria to effectively utilize the recommendations of the 2022 Global Poverty Index to tackle poverty and its associated challenges.

Professor Ismail Isa Mohamed made this known at a workshop on the use of the Multidimensional Poverty Index (MPI) for policy, planning, and budgeting in North-Central Nigeria, held in Abuja.

He explained that the report revealed that about 83 million Nigerians are multidimensionally poor, noting that poverty is no longer defined solely by lack of income but also by limited access to basic services and opportunities.

According to Ismail Isa Mohamed, a significant percentage of Nigerians experience multiple deprivations beyond income, stressing the need for a broader and more inclusive approach to poverty reduction.

The convener of the workshop, Dr. Oluwafemi Sadibo, said the training was designed to equip stakeholders with the knowledge and tools required to better understand poverty and allocate resources more effectively to reduce it.

Dr. Sadibo added that consultants involved in the initiative had been mandated to ensure the dissemination of relevant information and knowledge among participants.

Participants at the workshop were drawn from Benue, Nasarawa, Plateau States, and the Federal Capital Territory.
