‎The Africa Youth Growth Foundation (AYGF) has trained 150 farmers and agri-preneurs across Katsina and Daura local government areas of Katsina State on climate-smart agriculture and provided them with agri-business kits.

The training was part of the Strengthening Peace and Resilience in Nigeria (SPRiNG) Project, which is being co-implemented by Tetra-tech and funded by the United Kingdom’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

At the launch of the program in Katsina and Daura, the Project Manager and Northwest Zonal Coordinator for SPRiNG, Dr. Job Onuche, said the training was aimed at promoting sustainable farming practices among the benefiting communities.

Represented by the Finance Officer at AYGF, Mr. Salihu Ibrahim, Dr. Onuche explained that the project will strengthen climate-sensitive governance, promote sustainable agriculture and foster peace in Katsina and Daura local government areas.

“The beneficiaries were selected through Village Savings and Loans Associations in six wards across the two local government areas. Through these associations we will be able to track the trainees and monitor them to ensure that they put the training and agri-business kits to judicious use.

“The farmers were trained on climate-smart agriculture while livestock herders were trained on modern best practice in animal rearing to promote peace and minimize farmer-herder clashes in the selected communities”, he said.

Musa Sani, a trainee from Saulawa community in Katsina, said he learned smart farming techniques, business value chain linkage and peace building at community level.

Two officials from the Katsina State government, Dr. Mudassir Nasir and Alhaji Shehu Daura, expressed appreciation to the AYGF for the agriculture, youth empowerment and peace building interventions under the SPRiNG project while urging the trainees to engage in sustainable farming and agri-business in their communities.
