The Senate has urged the South East Development Commission (SEDC) to focus on infrastructural development that will impact positively on the lives of the ordinary citizens in the region and ensure financial discipline.
The Chairman of the committee Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, made the urge in his opening remarks during the commission’s budget defence.
He said SEDC is an avenue provided by President Bola Tinubu for the people of South East to develop their region .
Senator Orji Kalu emphersised the need for the commission to use the opportunity in developing the area, saying nothing should hinder the development of the South East.
The Senator warned that the commission should not be used to siphon money.
Managing Director of the SEDC, Mark Okoye, had presented the 2026 budget proposal to the tune of N140 billion before the Senate Committee on SEDC outlining the commission’s plans and priorities for the current year.
The committee has endorsed the proposed ₦140 billion 2026 budget of the South East Development Commission (SEDC), while many senators who contributed warned on fiscal discipline and urgent ecological intervention across the region.
