The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has opened a public consultation on the review of Nigeria’s National Telecommunications Policy (NTP) 2000, inviting stakeholders to submit written contributions by 20 March 2026.
The consultation, according to a statement by the NCC’s Head of Public Affairs, Mrs Nnenna Ukoha, marks the first formal step in updating the 25-year-old policy in line with the Nigerian Communications Act.
Under Section 24(1) of the Act, the Minister is required to direct the Commission to undertake a public consultative process before any review or formulation of general communications policy.
The review follows the inauguration of ministerial committees by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, to oversee the process.
The revised policy is expected to address issues such as spectrum management, broadband penetration, universal access, net neutrality and quality of service, reflecting changes in the sector since 2000.
The Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Aminu Maida, said the consultation would lead to the drafting of a new National Telecommunications Policy to replace the current framework.
He urged licensees, consumers, civil society groups and international partners to participate, describing the exercise as critical to shaping the next phase of Nigeria’s communications development.
