Nasarawa State Government has appealed to striking lecturers in the state-owned tertiary institutions to call off the ongoing strike action to pave the way for the negotiations to ensure the speedy resolution of the impasse.

 

Senior Special Assistant to Governor Abdullahi Sule on public affairs Mr. Peter Ahemba made the appeal while addressing journalists during a bimonthly press conference held in lafia, the state capital.

 

Mr. Peter Ahemba said, the strike by the College of Education Akwanga, Isa Mustapha Agwai Polytechnic, Lafia and College of Agriculture, Science and Technology, Lafia was capable of affecting the academic pursuit of the students and appealed to the unions to return back to the negotiation table for amicable resolution of the issues.

 

The Joint Unions of Nasarawa State Tertiary Institutions had on 29 of December, 2025, declared an indefinite strike action over the lack of implementation of the New National Minimum Wage to its members.

 

The Senior Special Assistant SSA on public affairs explained that, recently Governor Abdullahi Sule distributed one thousand mattresses and five double-bunk beds to the students of College of Education, Akwanga COEA, to improve the learning environment for the students.

 

He noted that the distribution is part of the desired attention to Governor Abdullahi Sule-led administration to continued given the education sector since its inception in 2019.

 

Mr. Peter Ahemba explained that the government had constructed many blocks of classrooms, renovated many schools, build parameters fencing in many schools to protect the schools against encroachment.

 

The governor’s aide said that the government is aware of the gradual infiltration of bad elements into the state, thereby posing security threats to residents.

 

He further condemn in the strongest terms, the recent midnight attack on residents of Akunza in Ashige community of Lafia by yet-to-be identified gunmen.

 

Mr. Peter Ahemba assured the residents that the government was working closely with security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to implement the latest security measures taken to address this type of situation.

 

He call on citizens to always assist security agencies with useful information that would lead to the arrest of criminals in all parts of the statement.

 

He assured the public that the government was doing everything possible to ensure the safety and security of the lives and property of citizens.

 

Ahemba therefore, appealed to members of the public to report any suspicious activities to the relevant authorities and to cooperate fully with security agencies to prevent and combat crime.
