Niger State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), has joined growing calls for the establishment of a commission dedicated to the welfare of persons with disabilities in the state.
State Chairman of NUJ Comrade Abu Nmodu stated this when he received the state Executive Members of the Nigeria Association for the Blind at the IBB Pen House in Minna.
He emphasized the need for such a commission to give a sense of belonging and institutional support to persons living with disabilities.
Comrade Abu Nmodu described persons with disabilities as a vital segment of society deserving of special government attention, considering their physical and psychological challenges.
He however commended Governor Mohammed Umar Bago for his administration’s focus on welfare and development programmes.
The NUJ state Chairman urge that the Governor extends similar gestures to persons with disabilities, particularly the visually impaired.
He further assured that journalists in the state would use their various media platforms to amplify the voices of the disabled community and draw the attention of government and stakeholders to their needs, especially in the provision of basic necessities of life.
Comrade Abu Nmodi also reaffirmed his commitment to supporting initiatives that would enhance the living conditions of persons with disabilities, pledging that the union’s doors remain open for collaboration.
Earlier, State Chairman of the Nigeria Association for the Blind, Malam Hamza Salihu, said the visit was part of activities marking the International White Cane Day, celebrated annually on October 15 to promote the independence and mobility of visually impaired persons worldwide.
He described the white cane as a symbol of freedom, confidence, and self-reliance, and called on the media to intensify advocacy and awareness about the challenges faced by persons with disabilities.
Malam Hamza Salihu expressed optimism that a strong partnership with the NUJ would help amplify their voices to reach policy makers and promote a society where disability is not equated with inability.
