President Bola Tinubu has announced the renaming of the University of Maiduguri in Borno State after the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

The announcement was made on Thursday during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, held in honour of the former Nigerian leader who passed away earlier this week.

In a tribute, President Tinubu described Buhari as “a leader of uncommon courage, integrity, and humility,” whose legacy, he said, will continue to inspire the nation. He noted that Buhari’s patriotism was evident both in public service and in private life.

“His was a life lived in full service to Nigeria and in fidelity to God. Even in death, General Buhari remained dignified and serene, submitting quietly to the will of God,” Tinubu said.

Reflecting on their political alliance, President Tinubu recalled how they forged a partnership that led to Nigeria’s first democratic transfer of power from a ruling party to the opposition in 2015. He commended Buhari for governing with dignity and for choosing to step away from public influence at the end of his tenure.

“When his tenure ended, he returned to Daura, not to command from the shadows or to hold court, but to live as he always had,” Tinubu stated.

The President also highlighted Buhari’s enduring commitment to Nigeria throughout his career, as Governor of the former North-Eastern State, Head of State, Chairman of the Petroleum Trust Fund, and ultimately as a two-term President.

President Tinubu expressed gratitude to the Inter-Ministerial Committee, led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, for organising a state burial within 48 hours of Buhari’s passing.

He extended condolences to the former President’s widow, Hajia Aisha Buhari, his children, and the entire family.

“Mai Gaskiya, the People’s General, the Farmer President your duty is done. May Almighty Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Aljannah Firdaus. May his life continue to inspire generations of Nigerians to serve with courage, conviction, and selflessness”, Tinubu declared.
