The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday passed four bills to second reading, focusing on national development through education, digital economy, and health care.

Among the bills is one seeking to promote digital governance and economic growth in Nigeria by ensuring certainty in digital transactions and service delivery.

The bill was sponsored by Senator Salisu Shuaib Afolabi, representing Ogun Central.

Also passed were three other establishment bills namely, the Federal University of Science, Deba in Gombe State, sponsored by Senator Muhammad Danjuma Goje; and the Federal Oil and Gas Hospital in Bentkrukru, Delta State, proposed by Senator Joel Onowakpo Thomas for improved healthcare services in oil-producing areas.

The fourth bill seeks to establish the Federal University of Arts, Culture, Science, and Tourism in Igbara-Oke, Ondo State, and was sponsored by Senator Adeghanmire Adeniyi Ayodele from Ondo Central.

All four bills were referred to the relevant Senate committees for further scrutiny and are expected to return for third reading and possible passage.

Meanwhile, the Senate also considered the 2025 budget reports of the Nigerian Communications Commission NCC and the Universal Service Provision Fund USPF, presented by Senator Ikra Aliyu Bilbis, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Communications.

In a related development, the Senate reviewed two bills for concurrence: the domestication of the African Union Convention on Internally Displaced Persons and the establishment of the Food Vendors Registration Council of Nigeria. Both were sponsored by Senate Leader Michael Opeyemi Bamidele.

The Senate continues its legislative work aimed at strengthening governance, education, and service delivery across key sectors in Nigeria.
