Ram dealers in Zamfara State have raised concerns over poor sales as the Eid-el-Kabir, approaches despite sufficient livestock in the markets.

Malam Saidu Gusau, Chairman of the Zamfara State Livestock Sellers Association, shared these worries in an interview with Radio Nigeria in Gusau.

He noted that while markets are well-stocked with rams, there has been a significant drop in individual buyers. However, he remains hopeful that demand may pick up as the festive period draws closer.

“If this trend continues, we are facing a serious issue because sales are extremely slow,” he admitted. “Still, I believe that in the coming days, things may improve, God willing.” he stated.

Malam Gusau explained that the Association had worked hard to secure enough rams for the season, particularly after Niger Republic’s border closure disrupted cross-border supply.

“When Niger closed its borders, it halted ram exports to neighbouring countries. That’s why we made extra efforts to bring in more livestock, ensuring Zamfara residents can perform their Eid sacrifices without difficulty.”

He also lamented the sharp rise in prices compared to last year.

“Last year, the smallest suitable ram for sacrifice sold for around ₦40,000, but now, even the smallest costs over ₦100,000. Goats start from ₦55,000 to ₦60,000, while the cheapest sheep is priced at ₦70,000.”

Malam Gusau explained that for the first time in Gusau market’s history, a ram was sold for over ₦1 million this year.

“Previously, such high-value rams were taken to wealthier markets, but this time, one was sold right here.”

Malam Gusau urged fellow traders to conduct their business with honesty and piety to earn divine blessings.

Meanwhile, a Gusau resident who came to the market with ₦50,000 to buy a sheep was disappointment that he could not afford one.

“I’ve decided to use the money to buy maize for my family instead,” he told Radio Nigeria.

Another buyer acknowledged the price hike and advised people to purchase only what they can afford.
