The Kano State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has described the tragic demise of twenty-two members of the Kano State contingent who participated in the just-concluded National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, as a devastating loss.

In a joint statement issued to media organizations across the state and beyond, the Interim Chairman of the Union, Comrade Mustapha Gambo Muhammad and the Secretary, Comrade Abubakar Shehu Kwaru, expressed profound grief over the incident.

They lamented the manner in which the team members, who were only a few kilometers away from reuniting with their families, colleagues, friends, and well-wishers after representing the state at the biennial games, tragically lost their lives.

The statement noted that while death is an inevitable end appointed for everyone at an unknown time, the circumstances surrounding this tragedy were particularly painful, given that the athletes left the games venue in high spirits, hale and hearty, unaware that their time was up.
