Kano State Ministry of Health  has made significant strides in joining the world on World Hypertension Day.

Commissioner for Health Dr.Abubakar Labaran disclosed this during a media briefing in commemoration of the world hypertension day celebration,held in Kano.

In commemoration of the day,the ministry organized a walk and press briefing aimed at raising awareness about hypertension and promoting its prevention, detection, and management.

The walk commenced at the Ministry of Health, Post Office Road, at 8:30 am and concluded at the Emergency Operations Center (EOC) inside Nassarawa Hospital, where the press briefing was held.

Dr Abubakar Labaran maintained that the event is part of a global effort to combat hypertension, a leading public health challenge affecting over 1.28 billion adults worldwide.

“Hypertension, often referred to as a silent killer, can lead to severe complications, including heart, stroke, kidney damage, and other cardiovascular diseases if left uncontrolled.”

He noted that Kano state government was according much priority to addressing the rising challenge of hypertension disease among people, stressing that government has established centers across the state for taking care of hypertension patients .

The GAMMUN Centre for Care and Development Nigeria (GCCDN) is also working to provide lasting solutions for people with hypertension through its quarterly immersion programs with key government officials.

The theme for World Hypertension Day 2025 is “Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control it, Live Longer!”

“This theme emphasizes the importance of accurate blood pressure measurement and encourages individuals to take control of their health. ”

“By making conscious lifestyle changes, such as reducing salt intake, exercising regularly, managing stress, and avoiding tobacco and alcohol, people can reduce the risk of serious health problems and improve their quality of life.”

Dr Abubakar Labaran further explained that the World Hypertension League (WHL) initiated World Hypertension Day in 2005, and since then, it has been observed annually on May 17.

“The WHL, along with health organizations worldwide, promotes this day by organizing free screening camps, educational sessions, and health talks.”

The Commissioner added that By participating in the World Hypertension Day event, individuals can take a proactive step towards maintaining good heart health and reducing the risk of hypertension-related complications.
