Philippine has made its first historic women’s world cup win with a 1-0 surprising co-host New Zealand on Tuesday.

27-year-old striker Sabrina Bolden gave the goal shot in the 24th minute securing the country’s first World Cup win to keep alive their hopes of progressing in their debut tournament.

In the second half, New Zealand gave the Philippines everything they had, but it was in vain.

The climax of the game came when Jacqui Hand the co-host header who hit the post which headed home and seemed to be an equalizer but was ruled out by the referee as an offside.

At Wellington Regional Stadium, over 33000 audience dominated by Ferns looking forward for an equalizing goal were disappointed as Philippine turned the script.

Philippines goalkeeper Olivia McDaniel. who played key role to save and keep her team on the game said, “I think we really put our head down and we knew what was coming at us tonight.”

New Zealand coach Jitka Klimkova said the result from the game was heartbreaking but is not over yet.

 The Philippines will close out their Group A against Norway on Sunday, while New Zealand face Switzerland.
