Media practitioners in Nigeria have been charged, to assist in intensifying public enlightenment on the challenges encountered by medical professionals and caregivers during management and treatment of some health problems.

The call was made by Dr. Patience Obiagwe and Dr. Jegebe O. Y. of the Department of Paediatrics, during the bi-weekly Clinical Presentation of Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital.

Presenting a paper titled “Failing Kidney in Children:A smouldering Volcano” identified some of the immediate and remote challenges faced by many medical professionals in Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, while treating patients.

Dr. Patience and Dr. Jegede highlighted some common causes of Acute Kidney Injury (AKI) in children which includes sepsis, malaria, acute gastroenteritis, misuse of drugs (concoctions), perinatal asphyxia, and prematurity.

The paper however, called on the media and medical professionals, to increase public awareness and sensitisation of the community, on some of the inherent patients management challenges with a view to reducing hospital admission, long stay in the hospital as well as save cost of management and treatment of patients both at home and the hospital.

Responding, the deputy Chairman Medical Advisory Committee in charge of clinical services, Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Professor Idris Abubakar commended the department of Paediatrics for the in depth research on the topic.

He noted that, preparations were in top gear on the production of leaflets and roll banners, on ways of managing and mitigating certain illnesses by management of the hospital.
