Public Hearing Will Add Credibility To Constitution Amendment – Speaker

Kano State House of assembly says, it has organized stakeholders engagements for the purpose of collating public inputs, and professional advise that will help in addressing the gaps identified in the constitution.

Speaker kano state house of assembly, Engineer Hamisu Ibrahim Chidari, made the assertion while declaring open, a public hearing on the 5th alteration of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, held at the state assembly complex, Kano.

He explained that the National Assembly has conveyed the alteration of 44 bills, that require deliberation and subsequent voting for concurrence with the national assembly.

Engineer Hamisu Ibrahim Chidari noted that, as representatives of the people and to comply with the principles of openness and inclusiveness, the House would always be keen on subjecting any critical bill under consideration to public hearing.

” I want to assure you that your views will not only be appreciated but will also be considered with outmost respect”.

In his remarks, Chairman ad-hoc committee on alteration of the constitution, Alhaji Kabiru Hassan Dashi highlighted that, 68 sections were proposed to the National Assembly, 44 were approved and cascaded to state assemblies.

Alhaji Kabiru who doubles as the deputy speaker, commended partnership to Engage Reform and learn (PERL), for it’s support and technical guidance.

“Kano state House of Assembly will make it’s decision known in the next two weeks”.

Speaking on behalf of all workers and pensioners, Kano state NLC chairman, Comrade Kabiru Ado Minjibir said the organized labour is calling for local government autonomy, legislative autonomy and judicial autonomy to move the country forward.

He maintained that, the congress is calling for the immediate scrapping of state and local government joint account, which has weakened local governments as many do not have the capacity to generate revenue to cater for their needs.

Representatives from the five emirate councils, called for inclusion of traditional institutions in the 5th alteration as they are the backbone of every society.

On contributions by civil society organizations, Tahir Muhammad Sani from sustainable community partisan and Awaisu Umar Usman representing Kano community based organizations (CKCBOS), advocated for approval of LG autonomy, state legislative and judicial autonomy, traditional rulers and institution bills among others.

The public hearing on the 5th alteration bills of the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria, witnessed large turn out of representatives of NULGE, ANAN, NIMS and other relevant stakeholders calling for special considerations in various aspects of the bills transmitted to the state assembly.
