UN To Assist Nigeria Overcome Reliance On Foreign Aid

Written by Bunmi Abdulraheem

United Nations has expressed readiness to support federal and states government to overcome the continued dependence of aid from development nations.

The new acting Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Nigeria Mr. Matthais Schmale made the commitment during a courtesy visit to Borno state Governor Babagana Zulum at the Government House, Maiduguri.

Mr. Schmale said the United Nations was commited to partner with the state to address the humanitarian and development gaps.

He promised to consolidate on the successes recorded by his predecessor Edward Kallon to improve the wellbeing of people in the region and the entire county.

Responding, Borno state Governor Babagana Zulum thanked the UN system for the continued intervention to victims of insurgency.

He debunked the information making rounds that Borno state government was forcing IDPs out of camps, stressing that the resettlement plan was in line with conventions and protocols of international community.

The Governor called on the United Nations and other partners to help in building back resilience of about fifty thousand farmers that have so far returned to their communities with farm inputs and machinery.

He also requested the support for IDPs outside Maiduguri, reduce duplication of intervention by partners and provide livelihood assistance for the newly resettled IDPs.
