As part of efforts of prevention and control of cholera pandemic, jigawa state local government areas cholera response team and Save the Children international had embarked on sensitization of community members about cholera prevention,water, sanitation and hygiene in 10 local government areas of the state.

The Team Leader of Birnin kudu local government cholera response team, Mallam Bello Abdulkareem disclosed this during distributions of sanitation materials to 1000 households across the 10 local government area in Kangire village.

He explained that, the response intervention is going on in Dutse, Ringim, Jahun, Garki, Birnin Kudu, Gwaram, Guri, Mallam Madori, Hadejia and Buji.

He said, Save the Children International is supporting the 10 LGA’s with clinical interventions, such as training of health workers and supply of medical consumables and community based interventions.

Mallam Bello Abdulkareem said others also include training of community structures, distribution of non-food items to affected families, sensitization of community members about cholera prevention and water, hygiene and sanitation WASH interventions, including disinfection and water purification, environmental sanitation among others. 

According to him, the training of community structures is targeted at ward development committee members, community key Informants, Jakada Lafiya, WASHCOM, and traditional birth attendants.

The team leader noted that a total of 150 persons are being trained across 30 communities in 10 local government areas of the state. 

Radio Nigeria reports that 30 health workers have been trained by Save the Children International on cholera management and response from the 10 supported LGAs, and they are being supported to conduct step down training to more health workers in their local government areas.
