There are certain things the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would do before he went to pray Jummah at the mosque. It is obligatory for every man to go to the mosque for Friday prayers, however sometimes we get so caught up with our own lives that it is difficult to take time out for what is truly necessary. Some of these hadith will inspire you to do the same and go to the mosque on Friday!

Salman (may God be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said “if a man takes a bath on Friday, cleans himself as much as he can, oils his hair, applies perfume available in his house, sets forth for the mosque, does not separate two people (to make a seat for himself). Performs as many prayers as written (by Allah) for him, remains silent when the Imam speaks, for his sins between that Friday and the following Friday will be forgiven” (Al-Bukhari).

Another practice of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would be to read Surah Kahf of the Quran. Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri (may God be pleased with him) reported the Prophet saying “Whoever reads Surah Kahf on the night of Jummah, will have a light that will stretch between him and the Ancient House (the Kabah).”

Friday Checklist

  • Read Surah Kahf
  • Take a shower
  • Cut your nails
  • Brush your teeth, the Prophet used siwak but you could use a toothbrush
  • Wear clean clothes
  • Wear Perfume
  • Arrive early at the mosque
  • Sit quietly during the sermon
  • Lastly Supplicate Excessively:

Although every Muslim should supplicate whenever he or she finds chance any day of the week, however, special days like Friday call for special or excessive need of supplication. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said in a hadith:

“There is no day more virtuous than Friday. There is such an hour in this day that no Muslim will make dua in it except that his dua will be accepted. And he does not seek protection from anything except that Allah will grant him protection.” (Tirmidhi)
