A non governmental organization NGO, the Adolescent Health and Information Projects, AHIP, has called for increased investment in literacy, digital skills and inclusive education to empower adolescents and other vulnerable groups.
The Executive Director of AHIP, Dr. Mairo V. Bello, made the call in a statement to mark this year’s International Literacy Day.
Dr. Bello said literacy goes beyond the ability to read and write, stressing that young people also need digital, health, media and financial literacy to enable them make informed decisions and participate meaningfully in society.
She noted that adolescents, particularly girls and those in underserved communities, continue to face barriers to quality education and access to reliable information.
The AHIP Executive Director therefore urged governments at all levels, development partners, civil society organisations, communities and the private sector to strengthen interventions that promote equitable access to education and learning opportunities.
Dr. Bello also emphasised the need for safe and supportive learning environments, saying girls and boys should be equipped with relevant skills to navigate the growing influence of social media, artificial intelligence and online information.
She said AHIP remains committed to working with relevant stakeholders to promote literacy, adolescent health, access to accurate information and the wellbeing of young people.
The Executive Director called on stakeholders to use International Literacy Day to renew their commitment towards ensuring that every child, adolescent and adult has access to the knowledge and skills required to lead healthy, productive and dignified lives.
