Governor Umar Namadi has reaffirmed the Jigawa State Government’s commitment to tackling erosion by increasing funding for the ongoing Kila Erosion Control Project to nearly ₦3 billion.
The governor made this known while inspecting the erosion control project in Kila, as well as ongoing road and bridge projects in Gwaram Local Government Area.
He described the intervention as part of his administration’s efforts to protect lives, property and vulnerable communities from the devastating effects of environmental degradation.
Governor Namadi expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of work but directed the contractor to expand the scope of the project by reinforcing additional stone pitching and drainage channels to ensure long-term durability.
He said Kila, one of the oldest communities in the emirate, had suffered the effects of gully erosion for more than a decade, with large sections of the town already affected.
The governor expressed confidence that the project would provide a lasting solution to the erosion problem and improve the safety of residents and their property.
He disclosed that the state government had begun discussions with the Ecological Project Office to strengthen collaboration on erosion control, while reaffirming its commitment to taking proactive measures rather than waiting for external intervention.
Governor Namadi noted that the state had already executed major erosion control projects under the ACReSAL Programme in Danmasara and Kalgo, with investments exceeding ₦10 billion.
He said similar interventions would be extended to other communities facing erosion challenges across the state to minimise environmental risks and safeguard livelihoods.
The governor explained that the Kila Erosion Control Project was initially valued at about ₦2.6 billion, but said the additional reinforcement ordered during the inspection would increase the contract value to approximately ₦3 billion.
Radio Nigeria reports that Governor Namadi also inspected the ongoing reconstruction of bridges along the Gwaram–Basirka Road and other road infrastructure projects as part of his administration’s routine monitoring of capital projects.
