The Kanwan Katsina and District Head of Ketare, Alhaji Usman Bello Kankara, has extended a heartfelt goodwill message to the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN) as the association celebrated its past presidents.

MARAN is a body of journalists covering Nigeria’s maritime and customs sectors across the country and has been in existence for over 38 years.

In his message during the association’s 38th anniversary celebration held in Apapa, Lagos, the former Comptroller of Customs and one-time Public Relations Officer of the Apapa and Tin Can Island Customs Commands reflected on his long-standing relationship with MARAN, which dates back to 1989 when he served as a Deputy Superintendent of Customs (DSC).

He recalled being introduced to the association by its then president, Mr. Asu Beks, whom he fondly described as “Asu the Best.”

The traditional ruler, who was represented by veteran journalist Mr. Tunde Ojudun, commended successive MARAN presidents, including Mr. Pius Mordi, the late Mr. Ray Ugochukwu, and Mr. Sesan Onileimo, for their dedication and professionalism.

Kanwan Katsina noted that MARAN’s coverage and support played a significant role in his career, citing his recognition as Best Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Customs Service in 1999 in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, as well as the Tin Can Island Port Command’s award as Best Publicized Command in 2000 in Abeokuta, Ogun State, during the Comptroller-General of Customs Annual Conference.

He also recalled hosting monthly press briefings at the MARAN Press Centre in Apapa, Lagos, describing them as lively sessions that fostered camaraderie and strengthened ties between the Customs Service and the media.

He added that the engagements helped to build his confidence and capacity in public relations practice.

According to the former Customs spokesman, even after retiring from service ten years ago, he has continued to maintain strong ties with MARAN members, a testament to the enduring bond they share.

Although unable to attend the celebration in person, the Kanwan Katsina conveyed his deep respect and affection for MARAN, wishing the association and its members continued success, good health, and prosperity.
