Kaduna State House of Assembly has passed into law a bill establishing the Kaduna State Electricity Regulatory Commission, as well as a commercial and technical framework for the state’s electricity market and related matters.

The Speaker of the House, Yusuf Dahiru Liman, said the passage of the bill is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the electricity sector in Kaduna State and ensure effective regulation of power generation, distribution, and supply.

He noted that the new law will provide a clear legal framework to guide operators in the electricity market while also protecting the interests of consumers.

According to him, the commission will oversee licensing, tariffs, technical standards, and compliance among electricity service providers operating within the state.

He added that the new regulatory framework is expected to encourage private sector participation, attract investment, and improve electricity supply across communities in Kaduna State.

The Speaker also expressed optimism that the law will promote transparency, efficiency, and sustainable development in the state’s electricity market while supporting economic growth and industrial activities.

Earlier, while presenting the report, the Chairman of the Joint Committee on Public Works and Infrastructure and Judiciary, Muhammad Nasiru Idris, a member representing Sabon Gari Constituency, stated that the establishment of the Kaduna State Electricity Regulatory Commission would enable the state government to independently regulate electricity activities in line with the provisions of the Electricity Act 2023, which empowers states in Nigeria to develop and regulate their own electricity markets.
